| The Basics |
Character Name: Peregrin DerrickPB: Tom Welling Age: 23 Birthday: May 2, 1977 Wand: Alder, 13 inches, Hippogriff talon core. House in School: Slytherin Bloodline: Pureblood Political View: Perry is on whatever side won’t get him killed. He has no interest in political struggles; his survival is his agenda. However, becoming a werewolf has forced him out of his self-absorbed little world. Not only did he feel disinclined to pledge loyalty to the cause of his father—who abandoned Perry when he needed his father most—but an intense loathing of Fenrir Greyback swayed him to join the Order. Knowing the horror of the werewolf curse, Perry has decided that the best world is one where monsters like Fenrir are not allowed to run loose. Monsters like Perry, however, are another story. Right now, he feels surrounded on all sides by the enemy. He distrusts the Wizarding community as a whole—Death Eaters and all—and the Ministry has made it clear that it is no friend to werewolves. So his allegiance is to Remus and the rest of the pack. Whatever they decide, he will follow along. |
| Appearance |
Height: 6’3” Weight: 190 lbs Eyes: Hazel. Hair: Dark chestnut, near black. Normally kept short and full (typical preppy cut). This is also the color of his coat in wolf form. The lack of strong light at night obscures the brown tint of his fur, so he usually appears a solid black. Build: Medium, athletic build. Somewhat muscular, though it’s not obvious at first glance. Still, he is a big man, and a big wolf. Dress style: Not having many possessions now he’ll take whatever he can get, but he prefers a clean and stylish, but conservative look. Lots of solid colors; black, gray and midnight blue are favorites. His Muggle attire consists mainly of button-up collared shirts, vests, sweaters and polonecks, and dressy trousers. Never jeans. He rarely, if ever, wears bright colors like red or yellow. Basic Physical Description: As tall, dark and handsome as they get. Perry’s most dominant feature is his height. He was among the league of giants that Slytherin seemed to attract. During his teen years he was pretty well built and could intimidate with just his appearance. Years of stress and difficult living have put him a bit underweight, but he still retains some of that old strength. His features are sharp and angular, his skin more tan than fair. Long fingers, a piercing gaze, and an often brooding appearance. Defining Marks: At the lower left of his back, above his hip is the long mess of soft scar tissue that has changed his life. The messy web of damage creeps haphazardly in every direction and tapers into a thick scar toward the middle of his spine. During the war he obtained a number of other wounds, the most severe to his right arm and leg. A deep diagonal gash from the top of his right shoulder to the middle of his torso, another down the leg, and a scar on the back of the hand down to the wrist remain of those. Perry’s wounds have been slow in healing, not at all helped by a transformation in March. The leg has improved greatly since then, but the arm has been stiff and often trembles if under pressure for too long; writing, holding a cup, etc. The stiffness has eased somewhat with the help of Severus Snape, and he would perhaps gain better function of the limb if he'd allow someone to look at it. Even so, it’s doubtful that he will ever regain full use of it. Unfortunate, as it’s his wand arm. |
| Personality |
Perry was once confident and easy-going, if not pretentious. Arrogance runs in the family and Perry held himself on a high pedestal. He prided himself on intellect and his pure bloodline; both, among other things, made him better than the average witch or wizard. Despite his size he was not prone to fighting and actually preferred to avoid meaningless conflict. However, Perry had a hidden aggressive streak that could be triggered if one pushed the right buttons. Go out of your way to annoy him or mess with the wrong people and he became fiercely protective. Fighting was considered unrefined by Perry’s father, so he kept this side of him in check. The boy was self-centered, though not an attention hog. He preferred to keep to himself; better to spend his time thinking about his own pleasures and well being. Though he enjoyed the company of his fellow Slytherins, his parents instilled in him the need for emotional distance, as even the closest friends were not above stabbing you in the back when it suited them. Perry felt that socially savvy tips like these, along with his parents’ appreciation for the finer things in life (arts and culture, literature, material possessions), gave him an advantage over his peers. He considered himself better than everyone else: mentally, emotionally and physically. Perry has matured into a different man, though the ghost of his boyhood still remains. A few hard lessons have taught him that much of his parents’ advice was right; the people you trust the most will often let you down. Since being turned, he has become much like the skittish and timid dog that jumps at sudden noises and bites even the most well intentioned hand. His desire to protect himself is now even stronger; he doesn’t want to be abandoned or betrayed again, so he’s always wary of others’ intentions. However, this distrustful nature is at war with a new instinctual need for companionship. He relies on the protection and social order that his pack provides, and in turn is fiercely loyal. At the moment he is satisfied with his place in the hierarchy. He is right in the middle, leaving the senior members to make the important decisions while he just worries about looking out for the newer members. Never forgetful of his pride as a man—and his rank in the pack—however, he is quick to assert himself when annoyed, though rarely violently and he always kicks himself for it later. Perry is unpredictable and irrational in his shows of aggression. He struggles with anger; from the betrayal of his parents, the Ministry and his loss of freedom, his handicap, his fears, and the fact that he has to deal with problems like these! Perry is often surly and curt, but he does have the capacity for sensitivity... even if he refuses to show it. He can be kind and even generous as long as he feels it’s well deserved. He has a dry wit and his mind is forever at work, though not always to the benefit of others. The pack is one thing, but he feels no inclination to trust or be considerate to others unless they prove themselves worthy. |
| Psychology |
Extrovert/Introvert: Introvert. Though Perry is certainly capable of social interaction and expressing himself, he has never been dependent on it. Nowadays he is especially withdrawn and self-absorbed. Boggart Would Be: This would have once been Fenrir Greyback… now it is an image of Perry the werewolf, hair bristled and mangy, eyes madly rolling, frothy jaws snapping. He doesn’t fear the wolf, necessarily; rather, he fears losing his hold on it. To lose control means to lose what little he has left in the world. His intelligence, which has always been a source of pride; his pack, which he is sure would abandon him; and all the sense and humanity that separates him from lunatics like Greyback. Patronus Would Be: Perry has not had a need to produce a Patronus. |
| Sexuality |
He sees himself as straight; he’s really never looked at guys in a sexual way, and all of his romantic exploration has been with females. At Hogwarts he had a few girlfriends, mostly among the Slytherins... though there was one Ravenclaw.... Anyway, he’s been very discrete about his sexual escapades, only confiding in a select few Slytherin buddies. After all, “promiscuous” was not the attribute he wanted to present to the public. Living a very simple and often desperate life after his change left little opportunity for romance, and over the years his heart hardened against the idea. After all, his chance at an even remotely normal future was lost the night he was bitten. Even when he noticed a growing attraction to Pansy Parkinson, he did his best to fight it. Their relationship has been difficult, but to Perry's surprise their (frequent) problems have only strengthened their feelings for one another. |
| Lifestyle |
Occupation: Currently working for Charlotte Aurelius at Trésor Littéraire, and a hopeful duellist for Montague Morsus's newly acquired London Leeches. Residence: It used to be Marshwood, the Derrick estate. After the flight of his family, Perry drifted around Britain and eventually fell in with Remus’s pack. Shortly after the war the pack relocated to Severus Snape's house in Spinner’s End. In April 2001 he moved house with Pansy Parkinson, though he still returns to Spinner's End once a month for the full mon. Financial Status: A classic riches to rags story. The Derricks were perhaps not as well off as larger Wizarding clans, but they lived in moderate luxury. Unfortunately Perry's family abandoned him before establishing independent access to his account in Gringott's, leaving him penniless. What little money he acquired was spent on the barest necessities, but since the end of the war, he has been able to begin saving the few galleons he's earned. |
| Family |
Parents: Richard Derrick and Agatha McMillan, whose mother was a daughter of Caspar Crouch and Charis Black. Richard was a staunch Voldemort supporter like most of the rest of the Derrick family, but when last Perry saw him Richard was not a Death Eater. Agatha was slightly more ambiguous about her views; she cared less about revolutions and more about personal comfort. While she agreed that Muggles and half-bloods were inferior to purebloods, she never opposed their existence. She simply feared the assimilation of the two worlds, which could lead to a degradation of wizard power and culture. Siblings: A sister, Aster, who should be 14. Perry has seen neither her nor his parents since the attack. Perry idolized his parents. He grew up in a strict household where every move was watched and criticized, but he and his sister were still spoiled shamelessly. Perry saw his parents as incredibly clever and wise. The Derricks were a “new money” family borne of hard work and well-used connections, so they never compared to more prestigious clans like the Malfoys. However, they knew how to play the game, and because of this insight they considered themselves smarter (and ultimately, better) than the old Wizarding families. Much of Perry’s upbringing was devoted to learning how to look and act the part of a socialite. From this he learned how to play up the “Golden Boy” façade in order to hide inappropriate behavior. Richard Derrick ran in the Death Eater circles, though he never claimed his allegiance. The Derrick household was full of his prejudice talk, so much so that after a while Perry and his sister barely registered it. Perry agreed that Muggles were inferior, but preferred his mother’s more sensible reasoning. In the end he didn’t really care for or about Muggles or the Ministry (which the Derricks saw as incompetent). As long as they didn’t bother him, he was happy. Because the Derricks were such a close-knit clan, it took some time for Perry to acknowledge that they had indeed abandoned him in his time of need. He acknowledges that they had valid reasons for leaving; his parents did not support werewolves, and even more, the Death Eaters were still a danger to the rest of the family. In their place, he most likely would have made the same decision... however much it pains him to admit it. He would like to think that blood ties, ethics, and even his place as Richard's heir would have kept his family—Richard especially—by his side. His feelings are mixed and very confusing; he hates his parents for leaving him (and himself even more for caring), but also wishes desperately for the family he lost. Perry has no clue if they've tried to look for him or if they're even alive. He, however, has not tried to contact them. |
| History from student days at Hogwarts to the present time |
The fact that Perry was sorted into Slytherin came as no surprise to him or his family. It was his father’s House, and the House of many of his relatives. Perry was shrewd and adaptable, a survivor just like his father; he was made for Slytherin. And he quickly rose to the challenge of living up to the Slytherin—and the Derrick—standard. In his House Perry was one of the popular guys; he had the sophistication, the looks, the grades, and the girls. He discovered quickly that he had a talent for Quidditch and became a beater in his second year. Though not the biggest Slytherin, he was still a head taller than most students his age and became more brawny with each Quidditch season. Thanks to a cunning nature, he was able to get away with the worst while always exhibiting the best; good grades, good behavior… and an athlete to boot! Many conflicting views on Perry floated through Hogwarts; some loved him, some correctly perceived him as arrogant and two-faced, others feared him. For Perry, those years were golden. Upon leaving Hogwarts, Perry returned to the family estate: Marshwood. His mother, who was a descendent of the prestigious Black family, had inherited it. Marshwood was a dismal and often putrid place that Perry never much cared for, as it was built in the middle of a vast swamp area. It was a questionable decision to Perry; but to Richard Derrick, who appreciated his privacy, it was architectural genius. Richard had a loud and pompous manner, always reciting quotes and anecdotes to his children, commenting on the state of the Ministry and the plague of Muggledom on society. However, that summer Marshwood became unusually quiet. Perry knew his father well enough to recognize the reason for his parents’ now hushed conversations. The only subject on which Richard refused to speak was Voldemort and his Death Eaters. For someone who prided himself on cleverness, overlooking the warning signs was foolishly naïve of Perry. He hadn’t cared when Richard started cutting off his friends and associates; though Perry did complain when his father began confining the rest of the family to the estate, as well. Richard was obviously afraid of something, but Perry didn’t bother to find out what. He didn’t get the full story until one autumn night when Richard’s old friends came to call. Death Eaters, all of them. And they wanted the Derricks on the roster. They were quite downhearted when Richard yet again refused, but told him he’d be given another week to change his mind. When the week came and went, Perry assumed the matter was done with. His father was still fretful, but Perry decided it was high time to get his life back to normal. He snuck out that night for a bit of a pub-crawl with his old Slytherin friends; his beater partner Bole among them. It was much later when he returned home, and coming up the lawn he was greeted with the terror of his life. A werewolf. Fenrir Greyback. Perry’s dismembered corpse was about to become the latest presentation in the Death Eaters’ marketing campaign. Even as Greyback was ripping into him, Perry managed to find his wand and fire a disorienting shot. Then he was off into the maze of dark pools and thick fog that surrounded his home, all the while keeping a steady pace as he navigated paths memorized from childhood. At one point he lost his footing and slipped down over his head into murky waters, but he managed to grab a handful of roots and pull himself out. He finally made it through the swamp and flew on, not once looking back to see if that monster was still after him. Thankfully, he wasn’t. Perry headed for the nearest wizard family he knew, barely reaching their door before he passed out from blood loss. When next he woke, he was in St. Mungo’s, and the prognosis was not good. Werewolf bites. No cure. No hope. His life was over. At least, it was when Perry received his next bit of exciting news; the healers could not contact his family. Marshwood had been deserted. Perry was in shock that his parents would not only fail to visit, to try to comfort him and bring him back home… but to leave him utterly alone in the world? After leaving the hospital Perry wandered for a while. He first went back to Marshwood, as if expecting to find his family waiting for him. When he realized they had indeed fled he continued on, calling on friends and family. Not one allowed him to stay upon realizing what he was. Still fearful that Greyback or Richard’s friends would return for him one day, he did his best to simply disappear. He moved around, picking up odd jobs here and there, never giving his real name or revealing he was a werewolf. Perry had decided that he would not welcome emotional attachment into his life again, and certainly did not want anyone finding him. With any luck, Peregrin Derrick would eventually cease to exist. As this new life took its toll, Perry became a ghost of his former self; he lost much of the bulk for which he was famous at Hogwarts, his skin paled, his eyes were ringed in shadow. It was by chance that, after nearly a year underground, Perry came upon Severus Snape. He was shocked how great it felt to see a familiar face and told his old Head of House what had transpired since leaving Hogwarts. While he hoped to gain a bit of sympathy, he expected Snape would shun him like all the rest and waited nervously. To his surprise, Snape directed him to find Remus Lupin. It took Perry some time to decide what to do; he remembered Lupin as a professor at Hogwarts, but not as one he really liked. But Snape had said it would be safe, and it had to be better than living on the street. Of course, joining the Order of the Phoenix had not been his intention. Remus was indeed a kind man and didn’t force him into the situation, so Perry took his time in coming to a decision. In truth he was wary of aligning himself to any cause… but if sides must be chosen, he wouldn’t be a Death Eater. He would not become one of the devils that ruined his life; nor did he want to be like his father. Besides that, Perry was simply tired of being alone, of hiding and feeling inferior. He agreed to join Remus’s pack. Learning to function in a group again took some time, but Perry was glad to be among people who didn’t judge him. In the end it was the right decision. His health improved, and though still guarded, with time he even began to grow fond of his pack members… not that he ever let on. His devotion was not as much to the Order as it was to Remus and the pack. But the desire to end Voldemort’s reign of terror was motivation as well. Where he had escaped Greyback’s jaws, Perry learned that his old friend Bole had not been so lucky. His loathing of the Death Eaters only intensified. Remus led the pack into the fray around Hogwarts that final bloody day, and Perry gave it his all; partly in the name of his own loyalties… partly because staying alive required the full use of his senses. He did a fair bit of damage with both wand and fist, but by the end he had suffered quite a few injuries. As the Death Eaters lay writhing on the ground Perry did what any wounded and scared animal would; he hid. He ran into the Forbidden Forest as far as his injuries would allow and collapsed. It was a few hours before he was found and taken to the werewolf camp. Running off alone with gaping wounds and broken bones had not been the brightest idea, but a survivor’s spirit kept him alive and put him on the road to recovery. |
